Milk Powder Processing Plant owned and operated by Hilmar Cheese opened in 2015. About 50 tanker trucks filled with milk are expected to roll into the Turlock facility every day. That milk will come primarily from Stanislaus and Merced dairies. The plant’s specialty equipment will remove all the water from the milk. The company already uses a similar drying process in producing concentrated whey and lactose products. The Turlock facility will produce milk powders designed to be a primary source of nutrition for developing nations. Dehydrated milk does not require refrigeration, which makes it easier to transport and store than regular milk. The powder can be turned back into liquid milk by adding water.

If we continue to ship product in for them to convert we need to make sure the core widths we send them work for their equipment (we cut down) OR we consider sending Mill Rills or Jumbo Rolls on racks.

NOTE: Frames 23 to 25 the steel bar they use inside the 3" cores.

This roll looks real good and converted well.

The steel cores were also cut a little too wide as they were binding on the inside edge of the converter frame supporting the Jumbo Roll.

This is the second Jumbo roll they converted on 8" steel cores that had to be cut down. The core ID was too big for the shaft they used and the material did not feed evenly off the roll, they could have used some type of tension control like a dancer bar to aid with the feeding as they had to manually unroll the material.

Starting at Second 15 you can see the bar with the bow in it caused by the paper core fit between it and the beige square tube of the frame.

First roll they worked with.

This is what they used to flatten out the material and allow it to wind without any wrinkles. NOTE They also use a weighted round bar inserted into the cores of the converted rolls that helps apply downward pressure onto the roll when winding.

NOTE: The round black colored tube used as the "Bow-Bar" is welded to the converter. At second 45 you will begin to see a square beige colored tube that runs across the width of the converter. There is a black tube below welded to the frame sides of the converter. This sits several inches below the beige square tube and you will notice a paper core cut to size that was wedged in between the black and beige tube giving the bottom bar a bend or bow.

It took them several attempts to run the material as they had nothing but wrinkles transferring from the Jumbo Roll to the Converted Roll they were using for set-up. We discussed the need to a bow roller to be used to lay the material flat before it wound onto the converted rolls. The rigged up a stationary tube with a bend it it that acted very effectively as a "bow-bar" and resolved any wrinkling transferring from the Jumbo Rolls to the Converted Rolls.
